What is an MRI?
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is the name given to a technique which uses a magnetic field and radio waves, together with an advanced computer system. The images produced are very detailed. They can show both bones and soft tissues in the body and provide a great deal of information. MR images allow doctors to evaluate parts of the body and certain diseases that may not be assessed adequately with other imaging methods such as x-ray, ultrasound, or computed tomography (CT).
Patient Experience
Our MRI scanners are a new generation. They have a a shorter tunnel and a wider bore making claustrophobia much less of a issue for our patients. The large machine is about four feet long and the area of interest is positioned in the centre. The scanners are quite noisy, however patients will be given headphones and can listen to music.
If you are particularly nervous, you are welcome to visit one of our centres and see a scanner before your appointment. To arrange a visit, please call us and a member of our team will facilitate this for you.
